      Background

I am creating a Stedi Guide for a YRC 204 out of their implementation guide.

I've gotten through it mostly, but there are a few parts of the guide that confuse me. I don't think this is a Stedi Guides problem and more of an issue with the spec, but I'm curious if there's any industry best practice on how best to handle it.

Specifically, the N4 Geographic Location element has the following instructions: ff11378c-364f-472d-8463-9c8a18d1f277-image.png

      Question

In the REQ column N405 is marked as not used. However, the comment in notes says that if N405 is present then N406 is required. Since N405 is not used, then according to the notes, neither is N406. So, should I just mark N406 as not used as well, or add the condition and mark N405 as optional?

@lamarr-henry The X in the Requirement column indicates that an element has a relational condition found in the syntax notes. This means it is an optional element, unless the relation condition makes it required or not used. X does not indicate 'not used'.

@lamarr-henry Just for a little clarity, is this correct?

            M - Required
            C - Conditionally Required
            O - Optional
            X - Conditionally Required
            N - Not Used

@lamarr-henry that is correct! I actually wrote a post on this, which you can view here, under "Element Requirements in X12 EDI"
